Chapter Thirteen

I must have gasped because Hank raised his head and blinked sleepy eyes. The first email was from Chris.

Before I even realized it, I was grinning like a goon. This expression immediately disappeared when I read the date of the message.

Dear Laura Lee,

A lot has happened since our breakup. I finished college, and wished you were there when we collected our diplomas. You deserved to be there. I never thanked you for all the help in social science you gave me. I probably wouldn’t have passed without you.

Remember our time out at the lake? I’ll never forget it. Anyway, I told you about my dad’s struggles with alcohol, and how I had to take care of my brothers. I felt like I had no family until my grandfather stepped into the picture.

Things changed when he did. He made me feel like I could accomplish anything. In fact, it was because of him that I tried for a scholarship. Remember when you met him at the restaurant? Man, we had such a good time and laughed so hard.

Anyway, he’s sick now. He’s not expected to live through the weekend. With mom gone, and dad… busy, I don’t have anyone else. My brothers are young and having the time of their lives. They don’t understand because they didn’t have the same bond with granddad as I did.

Anyway, this is heavy, and I’m not trying to dump on you. Heck, you’re probably reading this and telling yourself to run! Just wanted to hear from you. I feel like since you’ve met him, you’d understand. I know things ended badly between us, but I wish I could hear from you again, if only as friends,

Chris.

My heart hurt to read it. Wow, what had he thought when I hadn’t responded? I would have in a second, but he didn’t know that. Shame filled my cheeks as I remembered how we ran into each other in the elevator. I wiggled my foot under the blanket as I tried to digest this awkward situation, and Hank watched it with interest.

Should I email Chris back?

I couldn’t, not now. I groaned and clicked the light off, staring up into the darkness. Hank pounced and then bit my moving foot through the covers.

“Go to sleep, buddy,” I muttered. At least one of us should.”
